How To Choose The Perfect Pavement Sign

What Are Pavement Signs?

Pavement or sidewalk signs are a cost-effective way of getting your brand noticed and promoting your business at the point of sale or used as directional signs at events.

What Are They Used For?

Freestanding pavement signs have the flexibility to get your marketing messages across with maximum impact in a number of different ways on the high street. You can choose the type depending on whether you need a message that you can change frequently or a permanently branded message. Our UK based print studio will ensure you get the best possible print finish no matter which graphic type you choose. Types of media include:

  • Paper and weatherproof poster display
  • Chalkboard
  • PVC banner
  • Permanent printed message display area

Types Of Board Pavement Signs

A Frame Pavement Signs

Also known as sandwich boards or A-board signs, these portable signs have the advantage of being foldable, so are easy to store when not in use. Posters for the A board frames are held in place magnetically or by a snap-shut poster frame. Alternatively, they may have a chalkboard surface on which to write your own message using liquid chalk pens. Many of our customers choose to use PVC posters in A-boards for their weatherproof benefits when promoting their business. Check out our poster service here Poster Printing

Swinging Pavement Signs

A modern take on the pavement sign, this design incorporates a printed panel suspended by hooks on the top rail of the sign. This makes swing signs suitable for windy conditions as the panel moves with the wind. They can have either a permanent printed message or pockets to display posters.

Forecourt Pavement Signs

These are bigger signs that are used in garage forecourts or outside shopping centres. The distinguishing feature is a larger, heavier base that can be water-filled or made from concrete. They have a variety of different ways of displaying either paper or PVC posters.

Flexi Pavement Signs

These are a great value option where you might experience strong wind conditions. The simple design has a solid molded base and a flexible printed panel that bends in the wind.

Which Pavement Sign Is Right For Me?

Your Budget

As with most things, you get what you pay for in terms of durability and features. A low-cost pavement sign used in a sheltered location and taken in at night will be fine for promoting your business. For high traffic areas or exposed locations, it is wise to spend a little more and get a more stable and durable product.

Your Location

Wind and weather - certain designs stand up to windy conditions better than others. In general for strong winds look for a design with a weighted base and/or a panel that moves in the wind.

High traffic areas - make sure you have plenty of space available and you’re not obstructing pedestrians. Choose a size and style that is appropriate for your location.

Look and feel - if you're running a café, pub or restaurant you might opt for a chalkboard design, whereas a mobile phone shop might opt for a more modern flexi panel pavement sign.

Looking After Your Free Standing Pavement Sign

Pavement signs are designed for outdoor use but yours will last longer if you can bring them indoors at night and always use common sense in windy conditions.

Looking for a particular type of pavement sign? We have dedicated pages for our range of forecourt signs, folding A frame signs and swinging pavement signs.

What is the most popular size of pavement sign?

A1 pavement signs are our bestsellers. They are big enough to display eye catching posters yet easy to transport and store. Standard A1 posters are 594 x 841 mm in size, but the overall dimensions of the sign will vary based on the design and frame size. Full details and dimensions can be found on each product page. Although A1 is our most popular size, we stock a wide range of other sizes. If space is limited, an A2 or 20”x30” pavement sign may be a good option, if you are looking for a larger impact then an A0 poster size is the solution.

What is the most popular size of forecourt sign?

Forecourt signs tend to be larger as more space is typically available. The most popular forecourt signs hold an A0 poster (1189 (h) x 841mm (w)). These larger signs often have a weighted base for better stability. If you are looking for an even greater impact, 40”x60” (1524 (h) x 1016mm (w)) forecourt signs are great solution to maximum branding space.

Is it easy to change Pavement Sign Posters?

Changing custom posters on our pavement signs is incredibly simple. The method will vary depending on the design, some have snap-shut poster boards, while others have simple magnetic fixings. No tools are required, and you can have your new poster in place within minutes.

Do I need planning permission for a pavement sign?

UK planning permission for pavement signs is not always straightforward and depends on various factors including the type and size of size, where it is being placed and your local council guidelines. For full local information, be sure to check with your local council. Some of the main shared guidelines between councils include:

  • One sign per premises (even if it is shared)
  • Signs should not be placed within 2m of other pavement signs, bus stops, pedestrian crossings, pillars or other pavement safety features
  • Signs should not block pavements or access / emergency exit doors
  • There may be limits on size and features of the display
  • Signs should only be placed outside during trading hours

Printing service for Pavement Signs?

Our in-house print studio means that we can supply graphics for all of our pavement signs at great prices. For snap shut poster options, our preference is durable Weatherproof PVC Posters. For Swing & Flexi Panel signs, we print direct to board or mount vinyl graphics, depending on what is best for your design. Both options are durable and weatherproof to keep your graphics looking their best. We also offer replacement posters and panels, making it cheap and easy to update your branding.

Do I need tools to make my sign?

Lots of our pavement signs including A-boards are delivered assembled and just need to be unfolded. The others just require simple assembly and are up in a couple of minutes. They come with easy to follow instructions and no special tools are required.

What's an A-board Sign?

An A-board sign gets its name from its triangular shape, when open and in use, it looks like an "A" when viewed from the side. A-boards are also known as Sandwich Boards or A-frames. They are double-sided, portable, and affordable, making them our most popular range, with 1000s sold. You can use A-boards to display posters, chalkboards, or a combination of both. Do you sell pavement signs to the trade?

How can I secure the sign to prevent theft or movement?

Generally pavement signs are not a target of theft, however they are temporary displays that cannot be 100% secured. Waterbase options can be filled with water or sand to improve stability and reduce unwanted movement. The bases do include wheels to allow easy movement when required. Pavement signs should be moved inside overnight for safety and to meet council guidelines. For added safety, some people use bike locks or chains to secure their signs to a solid object or post.

Handling Windy Conditions with Pavement Signs?

The wind resistance of a pavement sign depends on its design. A-boards generally fare well in normal weather conditions. However, if your shop front is in a breezy location, it's advisable to choose a pavement sign specifically designed with wind resistance in mind. Swing signs, Flexible panel signs and waterbase signs are all designed for greater stability in windy conditions. For specific advice, check out our product pages. For all products we advise bringing them in in severe winds and weather conditions.

Is there a warranty on pavement signs?

Yes, all of our pavement signs include a manufacturers warranty. This covers any manufacturing defects found during use as advised on the product page. Warranty for pavement signs typically last between 1 and 5 years. Please note this does not include accidental damage or general wear and tear.

What type of poster should I use with my pavement sign?

Poster pavement signs come with a protective plastic cover sheet but most are not fully waterproof. Paper posters are suitable for indoor and protected outdoor use but for longer-term use in all weather conditions we recommend PVC Outdoor Posters. They are fully weatherproof and more durable to scratches and tears to keep your graphics looking their best for longer.
